Are the Snacks You Are Eating Healthy for You and Baby?

Eliminating or cutting back on the amount of artificial trans fats that you eat is better for the health of you and your baby.

There are artificial trans-fats and natural trans-fats (which are not a health concern). The natural ones are found in some milk and some meats.

Many process foods like margarine, french-fries, cookies contain harmful artificial trans-fats. Whenever possible choose not to eat these food types.

These artificial trans fats are a concern for your health and your baby's health. They have the potential to increase the bad LDL cholesterol and at the same time decrease the positive HDL cholesterol in your body. This increase in the LDL cholesterol can increase the risk of heart disease.

Digesting too much artificial trans fats is more impactful on women. It may increase the risk of infertility, and it has also been linked to lower birth weights. It could also cause high blood pressure during pregnancy and could cause the baby to be born early.

If a mom is breastfeeding the trans fats (both good and bad) can be transferred to the baby.

We have listed below some ideas that can help you to reduce the amount of artificial trans-fats in your diet.

* be conscious of the impact of the "bad" trans fats for you and your baby.

* when you shop read the product labels and whenever possible select items that have zero grams of trans fat or products that are trans fat free

* if you see on the product label that the product contains partially hydrogenated oil - begin to realize that this means that there are trans fats in the product. Look for an alternative product.

* choose foods prepared with little or no fat, leaner meats and low fat dairy products

* many margarines contain the "bad" trans fats. Start buying margarine that is made with non hydrogenated fat - look on the label for margarines that are "free of trans fat."

* when possible don't fry your food, or fry your food less often. Use healthier oils like canola oil (low in saturated fats and rich in monounsaturated fats), extra virgin olive oil (Rich in monounsaturated fat, olive oil also contains phytochemicals that may help lower blood cholesterol levels and protect against cancer) when you do fry foods.

* when frying foods use a vegetable oil spray like Pam. Even though these products are all fat - the small amount that you use will not add a significant amount of bad fat to your food.

* when eating at a restaurant look for products that are reduced fat or are free of transfats. If not sure ask your server for that information.

* eat more whole grain breads, cereals, vegetables, fruit, fish, shellfish (ex. shrimp), beans, nuts and lentils. This will lower the amount of articial transfats in your body.
