The Beginner's Guide to Making Fried Chicken

Fried chicken is near the top of the list when it comes to comfort food. Succulent moist chicken covered in a crispy batter is one of the most delicious foods there is. You can deep fry, pan fry, or even oven fry chicken. Fried chicken is also known as southern fried chicken and there are plenty of different fried chicken recipes to have a go at to suit your taste.

Tips for Great Fried Chicken

If fried chicken is something that you have never made before, do not worry because it is not difficult. You do need to take care when handling raw chicken and wash any surfaces touched by the raw chicken with hot, soapy water afterwards. To make a fried chicken recipe, you need to dip your chicken pieces into a batter and fry the chicken until it is golden brown and white all the way through.

An easy way to coat your chicken is to put your dry ingredients into a Ziploc bag and shake the chicken in the bag, a few pieces at a time. Then you can dip them into liquid batter and fry them. This method also helps to keep your kitchen clean, rather than getting flour all over the place!

For really crispy fried chicken, you can dredge your chicken pieces in flour, then into a milk and egg yolk mixture and then into breadcrumbs, rather than mixing the flour and breadcrumbs together.

It is important to take care when using hot oil. Do not put your face too close to the oil and never leave it unattended. Use tongs to put the chicken in the oil and to remove it from the oil to prevent spattering.

Different chicken parts cook at different rates so if you are using a variety of chicken pieces, you will need to start the thighs and legs first because these cook at 165 degrees F. Next add the breasts, turning the heat down to 160 degrees F and finally the wings which cook the fastest.

If the chicken is ready before anything else, do not worry. Put some water in an oven dish and add some rolled up foil balls. Spread a large piece of tin foil over the top, put the chicken on this piece, and cover everything with a lid. Keep this in a 175 degrees F oven until the remainder of the meal is cooked. The foil works like a steamer and keeps your chicken tender and moist until it is needed.

How to Serve Fried Chicken

So now you know how to make a great fried chicken recipe but what do you serve it with? It depends on the occasion. If you are making dinner for the family, you might like to serve it with mashed potatoes and beans or French fries and corn on the cob.

If you are making buffet food, you can serve the fried chicken warm or cold and have some sauces out so people can help themselves. If you want to know how much food for a party is the right amount, you can be generous with the fried chicken because if you make too much, you can enjoy it cold the following day.
