Some people think a wedding master of ceremonies should be an entertainer, and preferably a comedian, to keep everybody thoroughly entertained during the reception. They are looking for a star performer. Others believe the master of ceremonies should remain in the background acting as the host and coordinating each stage of the reception, with attention firmly focused on each speaker and contributor, and especially on the newlyweds. By tradition the role of the wedding master of ceremonies is to link together the formalities of the wedding reception including introducing speakers and making sure everything goes to plan as a fun celebration. A wedding MC must be familiar with wedding etiquette, understand the expectations of the newlyweds, a good public speaker, have a good sense of humor and be able to win over the cooperation of the guests. Successful wedding MCs know how to keep in the background and only step forward to keep the wedding reception going as planned, without dominating proceedings. A good wedding MC is traditionally more like a chairman than a star entertainment performer for a wedding reception. The wedding MC is usually a volunteer. Often he is the father of the bride acting as host of the wedding reception, or a friend or relative who has the necessary experience and personality. Occasionally the best men will also be the wedding MC. It may be asking too much for such volunteers to be star entertainment performers, but there is usually somebody available among family and friends who makes a good chairman. Somebody with the personality and sense of humor to make sure everybody enjoys themselves at the wedding reception will usually be chosen. Fortunate wedding couples may be able to call on an exceptionally entertaining and outgoing person who can put on something of a performance as the wedding MC. However the priority should be on finding somebody who is a good organizer and chairman. The best man's speech is often the highlight of the wedding reception, because it is usually quite funny. There may be some entertainment included as an item during the reception, such as a song by a musically talented family member or friend. Others in the wedding party, especially flower girls and pagers, should receive their due attention. A wedding MC who sees his role mainly as an entertainer may overpower the other less professional contributors to the reception and monopolize attention. It is important for the wedding couple to carefully brief their wedding MC about the approach they would like him to take. An expensive option is to hire a professional wedding master of ceremonies. This option is usually confined to society or a celebrity weddings. A professional MC may be expected by the guests to provide professional entertainment, but the irony is that professional MCs mostly see their role as being the chairman and facilitator for the reception. The wedding reception's master of ceremonies plays an influential role in how the event will be remembered by the newlyweds and their guests. A successful wedding MC will ensure that he is very well briefed and prepared about the couple's expectations for the wedding reception. He will focus more on smoothly linking together the formalities, speeches and items of the reception, and maintaining a happy atmosphere, than on putting on a performance of his own.
